Sunderland honours Armed Forces
Sunderland is paying tribute to the dedication and bravery of the Armed Forces this weekend as the city marks Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 27 June.
The Armed Forces Day flag was raised at City Hall on Friday morning (26 June), where it will fly throughout the weekend as a symbol of respect and gratitude.
Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Robert Hutchinson, hosted the flag-raising ceremony, welcoming veterans, serving personnel, civic leaders, and members of the public.
He said: "This ceremony is a chance to think about everyone who serves; the men and women in uniform, their families, and the organisations that support them. Today we thank them for the sacrifices they make for all of us.
"Sunderland has always stood alongside its Armed Forces; we have strong ties with serving military and with our veterans. I am privileged to be able to stand before you today and show my support for our Armed Forces."
The ceremony included speeches from the City Council's Armed Forces Champion Councillor Paul Donaghy and Deputy Lieutenant Wing Commander David Harris, and the Mayor's Chaplain Father Christopher Hancock offered a prayer before the flag was raised.
Cllr Donaghy said: "As a city, we have proudly raised the flag in recognition of Armed Forces Day for many years, both in commemoration and in celebration of the servicemen and women of the British Armed Forces.
"Here in Sunderland, we have close ties to the Armed Forces and maintain strong relationships with our serving military, particularly The Rifles and 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, both of whom hold the Freedom of the City.
"To our serving personnel, reservists, or veterans—I want to say thank you for all that you do. You are deeply valued, and your service is very much appreciated."
As part of the celebrations a free weekend of family-friendly activities is taking place at Seaburn Recreation Ground on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 June.
The Armed Forces Weekend event will feature military displays, live entertainment, and opportunities to meet service personnel, promising fun for visitors of all ages.
