On Thursday 2 May 2024 elections are taking place in Sunderland.  Over the coming weeks documentation and statutory notices relating to the elections will be published on these pages.

 

Local Government Elections

Local Elections will take place in Sunderland on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Sunderland City council has 75 Councillors and the City is divided into 25 Local government wards.  Each ward is represented by three Councillors who are appointed for a four-year term.

An election will be held on Thursday 2 May 2024 to elect 25 Councillors (one per ward ) to Sunderland City council.

 

Police and Crime Commissioner Election

Police and Crime Commissioner Elections will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Sunderland Returning Officer is the Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) for the Northumbria Police Area at the Police and Crime Commissioner election. The PARO is responsible for the overall conduct of the Police and Crime Commissioner Election and specifically their role includes, publishing the Notice of Election, the nomination process and liaising with candidates and agents and the collation of the election result following the verification and counting of votes across the police area and the declaration of result.

The list of local authorities that make up the Northumbria police area are Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.  The Local Returning Officer in each of these areas is responsible for conducting the election in their area.

North East Mayoral Combined Authority Election

North East Mayoral Combined Authority Election will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Sunderland Returning Officer is the Combined Authority Returning Officer (CARO) for the Combined Authority Mayoral Election. The responsibilities of the CARO  includes, publishing the Notice of Election, the nomination process, liaising with candidates and agents and the collation and Declaration of the election result following the verification and counting of votes across the North East Mayoral Combined Authority area.

The list of local authorities that make up the North East Mayoral Combined Authority area are Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.  The Local Returning Officer in each of these areas is responsible for conducting the election in their own area.

Important Deadline Dates

•The deadline for registering to vote for this election is 11:59pm on Tueday 16 April 2024.

•The deadline to apply for a postal vote, or change a current postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 17 April 2024.

•The deadline to apply to vote by  proxy is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April 2024
