Social distancing barriers removed

Work has started to remove social distancing barriers which were placed along some of Sunderland's busiest streets as part of Covid restrictions.

Social distancing

The barriers were put in place to widen footpaths and allow pedestrians more space to distance themselves from each other, in line with Department for Transport and Central Government advice.

Now, as restrictions are lifted, the red and white plastic barriers are being removed and footpaths will return to normal.

The barriers were located at:

  • High Street West
  • Holmeside and Vine Place
  • Houghton Centre
  • Sea Road
  • Outside Central Train Station

The barriers in place at High Street West, Athenaeum Street and Fawcett Street are being removed first, with the others following later in the week.

They will be taken away in the evenings and over weekends for safety reasons and to minimise disruption.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Cllr Graeme Miller, said: "As the latest easing of restrictions comes into effect and we see more businesses welcoming back customers, we will also see our streets return to normal.

"Removing these barriers is just one more step towards life returning to normal and it is fantastic to see people out and about once again. However, we must remember that the virus is still in circulation and continue to follow the guidance in place to keep us all safe."
