How to apply for a pavement licence

The fee for applying for a licence under the new process, is £100 and the consultation period is 5 working days (starting the day after a complete application is received) (but excluding public holidays)).

This consultation period is followed by a further 5 working days beginning with the first day after the public consultation period (again, excluding public holidays), for the application to be considered. However, if the local authority does not grant or refuse the licence within this time, it is deemed to have been granted for a year (but not beyond 30 September 2024).

The business can then place the proposed furniture such as tables and chairs within the area set out in the application.

Sunderland City Council has provided documentation to guide you through the application process including Frequently Asked Questions which may answer your queries.

Please read the Guidance notes first so that you have an understanding of what is required.
