The household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs) at Beach Street, Deptford and Campground, Wrekenton are now open following social distancing guidelines.

To make sure that our facilities can operate within the guidelines, and to protect the safety of our staff and our residents, there will be restrictions in place.

Separate your waste before you come - it will speed up your visit.

You must book an appointment to use the site.

Beach Street, Deptford

The restrictions in place:

  • Anyone in self-isolation or with Covid-19 symptoms must not visit the HWRC under any circumstances
  • If any households have had Covid-19 symptoms then the waste should be left for 72 hours before being brought to site, with that waste being doubled bagged
  • You must book an appointment to use the site to help manage traffic and reduce queuing
  • Only cars, car derived vans and pick up's will be allowed, no large vans, vehicle trailers or commercial vehicles of any type will be allowed on site initially to minimise time on site and to satisfy the anticipated high demand
  • The permit system for vans and vehicles towing trailers is currently suspended
  • Social distancing at two metres will be strictly enforced and staff are unable to assist the public in unloading waste from their vehicle
  • A maximum of two adults from the same household will be allowed out of a car to unload waste, and they must remain in their drop off area
  • Traffic management will be in place
  • Sites will be regularly cleaned
  • Proof of booking/address may be required, please display in your car windscreen
  • Residents should wash their hands before and after visiting the site and avoid touching their face

The following waste will be accepted:

  • Bagged household waste
  • Garden waste
  • Cardboard and wood, including old furniture
  • Small domestic appliances (i.e. vacuum cleaners, toasters, kettles, microwaves, lawn mowers etc)

For details about the Government's guidance on coronavirus and Household Waste and Recycling Centres please see Managing HWRCs in England during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

A booking system is in place to access the site. This will minimise waiting times and prevent the build-up of lengthy queues. Half hour time slots will be available with bookings available on a first come first served basis. There will be no access to the site without a booking.

Book an appointment

Due to significant roadworks in the area as part of the construction of SSTC3, traffic management arrangements will also be in place. If you have booked a visit to the site you will need to travel along Farringdon Row and join the queue at Beach Street at your allocated booking time and will need to follow strict social distancing measures while on site. See the Beach Street HWRC pre-booked appointment access map for details.

The centre will be open for cars, car derived vans and pick ups only. You will also need to display proof of address.

The site will temporarily be open from 8am to 8pm.

Campground, Wrekenton

Gateshead Council is re-opening its HWRCs including the facility at Campground, Wrekenton which is available for use by Sunderland residents. However this is expected to be very busy as well with strict social distancing measures in place and new ways of operating including the introduction of a temporary odd and even number plate system to help manage traffic and reduce queuing.

This means you can only visit the Campground HWRC on certain days depending on your vehicle number plate. For details about this site and the restrictions in place, please see Gateshead Council's household and waste recycling centres.

Tips for visiting the recycling centre

  • The recycling centre is accessible by vehicle only. Pedestrians are not allowed to carry waste on to site.
  • You must be a resident of Sunderland.
  • Plastic bags or bin bags can only go in the general waste skips. All other recycling must be removed from plastic bags. There are bins provided for the bags.
  • Make sure that you put the right material into the right container - staff are on hand to help.

Plans are being made for a new HWRC in Pallion. This new site will replace the existing Beach Street site.
