Child Poverty Strategy 2025-28

Sunderland City Council's first Child Poverty Strategy sets out how the council will work alongside partners to tackle child poverty and mitigate its impacts on children, young people and families across the city.

Building on the ambitions and commitments in the Sunderland City Plan, the strategy provides a framework for action for the council to work with other public services, voluntary and community organisations, businesses and local communities. It recognises that no single organisation can tackle child poverty alone and that coordinated, sustained partnership working is essential.

The strategy is grounded in local evidence and lived experience and reflects Sunderland's commitment to ensuring every child can thrive - growing up healthy, happy and free from the disadvantages caused by poverty. It focuses on addressing the root causes of poverty, and creating the conditions for long‑term opportunity and inclusion.

Through clear goals, strategic pillars and an accompanying delivery plan, the strategy defines how collective effort will be directed to improve outcomes for children and families, align local action with regional and national priorities, and ensure progress is monitored, transparent and accountable.
