Communities urged not to miss out on festival and event funding in 2026

Community organisations across Sunderland are being encouraged to apply for support to help bring their festival or event to life, as the City Council prepares to open applications for the 2026 Festival and Events Fund.

The fund offers grants of £100 to £5,000 to community groups, partnerships, community interest companies and social enterprises looking to develop new events or grow emerging ones. Funding can support a wide range of costs from venue hire and artist fees to equipment, marketing materials, road closures and more.

Last year's fund helped bring a range of creative, community‑led events to life across the city. From Boundaries Festival's immersive riverside soundwalk and youth electronic music workshops, to the Frames Art Festival, which brought accessible arts activities into public spaces to support wellbeing and local creatives. These successes highlight how even modest grants can spark new ideas, strengthen communities and create memorable experiences for residents.

Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of City Development at Sunderland City Council said: "We're incredibly proud of the creativity and community spirit shown across Sunderland, and this fund is all about helping that flourish.

"Whether it's a brand‑new idea or a growing event that needs a boost, this funding helps communities bring people together and celebrate what makes Sunderland special."

The City Council is particularly keen to support projects that:

•           Cultivate a vibrant and inclusive city

•           Support innovation and long-term sustainability

•           Strengthen community participation and cohesion

•           Promote local talent and creativity

•           Encourage environmentally responsible practices

•           Maximise non-public funding sources

•           Reflect and celebrate Sunderland's identity

Eligible applications must be for events planned to take place between Wednesday 1 April 2026 and Wednesday 31 March 2027.
