White Ribbon Day

The campaign encourages everyone to wear a white ribbon as a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls.

Held annually, the national campaign highlights the role that men and boys can play in ending violence against women and girls by safely challenging harmful attitudes and behaviour. This year's theme, "We Speak Up", calls on everyone to use their voices to challenge harmful behaviours and attitudes, and to stand together against gender‑based violence.

Earlier this year Sunderland City Council's Cabinet approved a 10-year mission aimed at eradicating domestic abuse and violence against women and girls. The new approach aims to address domestic abuse and violence against women and girls through a holistic, system-wide approach.

Developed in collaboration with partners and survivors, the strategy emphasises prevention, support for those impacted by domestic abuse, and holding perpetrators accountable.

It aims to create lasting change by addressing both the immediate needs of those impacted and the root causes of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.

Councillor Kelly Chequer, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Safer Communities, said: "I proudly wear a White Ribbon to honour the memory of those lost to domestic abuse, to support those impacted by it, and to stand with the campaign to end gender‑based violence. Domestic abuse is more common than many realise, but together we can make a difference. The council and our partners remain committed to positive change, working alongside those with lived experience to shape our future plans."

Laura Seebohm, Chief Executive of WWiN, added: "Raising awareness of domestic abuse is not just part of our mission, it is a responsibility we share as a community. By speaking up, listening, and supporting survivors, we strengthen the safety and wellbeing of our City and shows that Sunderland refuses to look away. Together, we can help ensure that every person feels safe, valued and protected across all our wonderful communities."
