Tech Mates Programme

Introduction

We are encouraging both new and existing Councillors to build their digital skills.  The Tech Mates Programme was originally created to support employees in developing their digital knowledge and making the most of available software licences and digital devices.  We are now expanding the Programme to include Councillors, helping them gain confidence and capability in using digital tools.

Digital Skills Framework: Self-Assessment Tool

To support Councillors in developing their digital confidence, Councillors identified 20 essential digital tasks aligned with the national Essential Digital Skills Framework. These tasks are grouped into four key skill areas and are considered fundamental for the role of an elected member at Sunderland City Council.

The aim is to help Councillors feel more confident using a range of devices, such as laptops (keyboard devices) and smartphones.

This self-assessment tool is designed to help you reflect on your confidence and ability across the 20 essential digital skills.  For each task, simply rate yourself using the scale provided.  There are no right or wrong answers, this is about understanding your current level and identifying areas for growth.

You can complete the assessment independently or with the support of a Tech Mate.  Once completed, your responses can be used to create a personalised digital skills development plan.

Sessions will be arranged at a mutually convenient date and time between the Tech Mate (volunteer) and the Tech Buddy (Councillor receiving support).
