The UK Government, awarded approximately £890,000 through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to the Council to address digital exclusion by tackling key challenges, such as, limited connectivity, lack of access to digital devices and skills, the cost of going online, with the need to improve trust levels and accessibility.

Engineer installing WiFi
Bringing free community Wi-Fi to Sunderland.  As part of our digital infrastructure improvements, we've installed cables, access points and smart sensors (known as IoT - Internet of Things) in local buildings.  These sensors help monitor things like damp and mould, count how many people visit, track Wi-Fi logins.  Thanks to the skilled engineers at Keep Business Running, over 16,000m2 of free community Wi-Fi is now available for local people.  You can connect using your own device or borrow one on site.  This is all part of making it easier for everyone to get online and stay connected.

As total of 37 trusted community partners have joined forces with the Council, Boldyn Networks and British Esports Federation to establish Digital Health Hubs across the city.  These hubs are open to residents of all ages and offer friendly support to help people get online and build digital confidence.
