Wellness Walking

Burn some calories, get some fresh air, and make new friends with the Active Sunderland Wellness Walking Programme.The programme consists of a series of walks that take place every week at various locations across Sunderland - all completely free of charge.

Running since 2010, it has helped thousands of residents to get outdoors and get moving in some of Sunderland's most attractive green spaces, parks and locations.

Health walks

All of our weekly led health walks are free of charge and are delivered by fully qualified, friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. It's a great way to get out in the fresh air, have fun, meet new people and improve your health and happiness. Walks last between 30 and 120 minutes.

Nordic Walks

Nordic walking originated in Finland in the 1930's. It uses special walking poles that help to engage the upper body and take away some of the pressure from the legs and lower back. Not only does this mean it is an ideal activity for those with leg and joint problems it also means more calories are burnt because more muscles are involved than walking without poles.

Nature walks

Sunderland is home to some fantastic outdoor spaces. Our nature walk takes in one of the very best at the beautiful riverside setting of Cox Green. This walk is slightly off the beaten track and give walkers a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. Keep your eyes peeled, wildlife seen along the river includes  buzzard, sparrowhawk,roe deer and otter!

Getting out into the great outdoors for a brisk walk is a super way to get the heart pumping and lift the spirits! Sunderland has access to some fantastic green spaces and countryside right on our doorstep. Now you can discover these places for yourself by downloading the FREE Viewranger walking app onto your mobile device and start following Active Sunderland.

You will be able to download dozens of routes completely free of charge! From a one mile stroll along the seafront to a more intense 12 miles along the river wear, there is something for everyone. Or you could simply create your own route and share with your friends.
