Registering a birth

We are adhering to social distancing, have desk screens and floor markings in place and offices will be cleaned between every appointment. Please arrive only 5 minutes before your appointment time.  

Please do not bring the baby, any other children or family to the appointment unless you must.

No baby or toilet facilities are available at this time.


Where to register?

When a child is born you must register the birth of your baby within 42 days of the date of the birth. The child should be registered in the registration district where your baby is born.

If necessary, the birth can be registered by making a declaration at any other Register Office in England or Wales. You will need to check with the Register Office concerned if you need to make an appointment. The Registrar will forward the information to the Register Office of the district where the birth took place.

When you register the birth, you will receive a full birth certificate that costs £11.

Fees for Changes to Initial Registration - Consideration by the Registrar General of a correction - £90.

Who can register?

If the parents are married when the baby is born, either parent can register the birth.

If the parents were not married to each other at the time of the birth, only the mother can register the birth.   In order for the father's/parent's details to be entered into the register the father/parent must also attend the registration.  The father's/parent's details cannot be entered into the register without them being present at the registration.

If one parent is unable to attend, the absent parent can make a statutory declaration acknowledging parentage or for either parent to obtain a Court Order naming the father.

Information needed to register a birth

Date and place of birth
Forename(s) and surname the parents wish the child to be known by
Sex of the child


Father (where the information is to be included)
Forename(s) and surname
Date and place of birth
Address at the time of registration


Forename(s) and surname
Maiden surname if the mother is or has been married
Date and place of birth
Usual address at the date of birth of the child and at the time of registration
Date of marriage if married to the child's father
Number of previous children


It would be helpful (but not essential) if you could bring supporting documents for the parents to the registration to help with name, date of birth, place of birth and address. This will ensure the information recorded in the registration is accurate.

The supporting documents could be:

Driving licence
Birth certificate
All marriage or civil partnership certificates
Deed poll
Proof of address (for example a utility bill or Council Tax bill)

This will ensure the information recorded in the registration is accurate.
