The walking programme is suspended until further notice due to COVID-19.
Burn some calories, get some fresh air, and make new friends with the Active Sunderland Wellness Walking Programme. The programme consists of a series of walks that take place every week at various locations across Sunderland - all completely free of charge.
Running since 2010, it has helped thousands of residents to get outdoors and get moving in some of Sunderland's most attractive green spaces, parks and locations.
All of our weekly led health walks are free of charge and are delivered by fully qualified, friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. It's a great way to get out in the fresh air, have fun, meet new people and improve your health and happiness. Walks last between 30 and 120 minutes.
Our programme is part of the National Walking for Health Scheme - www.walkingforhealth.org.uk/
Nordic walking originated in Finland in the 1930's. It uses special walking poles that help to engage the upper body and take away some of the pressure from the legs and lower back. Not only does this mean it is an ideal activity for those with leg and joint problems it also means more calories are burnt because more muscles are involved than walking without poles.
Sunderland is home to some fantastic outdoor spaces. Our two nature walks take in two of the very best; Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve and the Wear Valley at Cox Green. These walks are off the beaten track and give walkers a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. Keep your eyes peeled, wildlife seen on these walks has included buzzard, sparrowhawk, stoat and otter!
