The Football Hubs project is a national initiative supported by The FA, the government and The Premier League to offer an alternative, sustainable solution to the long term future of community football. This is especially relevant at a time when local authorities are under significant financial pressure to rationalise playing stock whilst maintaining existing levels of football participation.

In 2018 Sunderland was selected to become the latest Football Hub City by The Football Foundation and the projects funding partners. Construction started in January 2019. It is hoped that all 3 hubs will be operational for football to be played in the 2019/20 football season.
