The Football Hubs project is a national initiative supported by The FA, the government and The Premier League to offer an alternative, sustainable solution to the long term future of community football. This is especially relevant at a time when local authorities are under significant financial pressure to rationalise playing stock whilst maintaining existing levels of football participation.

In 2018 Sunderland was selected to become the latest Football Hub City by The Football Foundation and the projects funding partners. Construction started in January 2019. The Washington Hub became operational in November 2019 with Downhill Hub and Ford Hub following in early 2020.
