Book of Remembrance

To commemorate those cremated at Sunderland's crematorium we have provided Books of Remembrance.

As loved ones may not always be able to visit the Hall of Remembrance in person on the anniversary date, an electronic Book of Remembrance is available in the hall whereby you are able to search for an entry using the month and date and view it regardless of when you visit. You can however view the Book of Remembrance online.

There are four volumes, one for each quarter of the year.

The books contain leaves composed of the finest sheepskin parchment, bound in calf vellum and richly tooled in gold leaf, with the cover protected by cabochons of semi-precious stones.

Two pages of each book are allocated to each day of the year and the book is displayed in the Hall of Remembrance located at Sunderland Crematorium. The book is laid open at the corresponding day, in a protective glass case, so that the memorial entries may be seen on each anniversary, 365 days a year.

Entries of five lines may include an emblem such as a Regimental Badge or be embellished with a delicate water colour painting which may be of significance to the family.

A single floral tribute may be left on the anniversary of the death of a loved one in the Hall of Remembrance Garden. Tributes should be cut flowers only, any plants, balloons, wind chimes, cards, pictures, flags or any similar items will be removed. Floral tributes left within the Garden of Remembrance may be used in the chapel and other areas of the crematorium and during particularly busy periods, may be moved to other areas within the building.
