Libraries during Covid
Libraries Services will reopen as follows. Please check regularly for updated information in line with ongoing Government guidelines.
From Monday 19 July 2021
Washington Town Centre Library will open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm
City Library will open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm
Local History Library @ ETR will open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm
Houghton Library will open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 4pm, and Saturday, from 10am to 2pm
Time for Rhyme and Reading Groups can restart. No booking required, however, places will be limited and allocated on arrival. This will be a first come, first served policy.

Customers who continue to stay at home can still enjoy a fantastic range of services online. Please let your friends and family know and encourage them to subscribe to our e-book, e-audio and e-magazine service. For non-members it is easy to join over the phone or online. We want to ensure that everyone in the city can access reading for pleasure, to expand their knowledge, be entertained, learn and be inspired.
We continue to offer a wide range of digital services for all ages, to encourage reading for pleasure and reduce feelings of isolation during the ongoing crisis.
Free to access from your home computer, tablets, iPads and smartphones, a diverse library of e-books, e- audio books for all ages, family history and academic subjects to interactive nursery apps and storytelling to download for young children. You can browse, select, read or listen to books by your favourite author or choose a much loved literary classic whenever or wherever you are. There is something for all the family.
Get the latest on celebrity gossip with a virtual copy of Hello magazine or indulge your hobbies with publications covering topics such as food and drink, health, gardening and many more or how about delving into your ancestors past by accessing Find My Past to open over 4 billion historical records and start building that family tree you always planned to.

Our Books at Home service will continue although some delivery days may change but customers will be contacted in advance. New customers are welcome. We will also add more stock to our Ebooks and E audio for adults and children to enjoy.
Customers can return items and deposit them in the Book Return boxes at the entry point of each library during the revised opening hours. Please note no fines are being charged.
Books at Home service
Did you know that Sunderland Libraries Service offer a Books at Home delivery service? We have our own volunteers to deliver books and audio items to customers who are unable to access a library themselves. If you feel this may be of interest to someone you know, it's FREE to join, simply contact your Library Services.
Enjoy a selection of locally themed online jigsaws sourced from images within our Local History Library collections. New jigsaws are added regularly.
