Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter

The Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter was launched in September 2015 to coincide with Ofsted implementing a new Common Inspection Framework which will include for the first time a judgement on personal development, behaviour and welfare.

The Charter' has been developed as an improvement tool and to give credit to those key features of a school that are not always reflected in performance tables i.e. health and wellbeing of pupils, sport and physical activity opportunities and community involvement.

The Charter measures a school's performance over four key areas that include Education, Sport, Physical Activity and key Community standards. Levels of achievement are measured through a Gold, Silver and Bronze accreditation and are recognised by both the Education Leadership Board and Health and Well-Being Board.

Since the launch of this unique accreditation programme in 2015 - 2016, the Great Active Sunderland School Charter has been an incredible success, with 91 schools achieving either the bronze, silver or gold standard.

The Great Active Sunderland School Charter has been developed to be a celebration of a school's contribution to four key areas including PE, Sport, Physical Activity and its role in the Community. The Charter can provide many benefits for schools, such as:

  • It can be used as an improvement tool for the Ofsted inspection framework, which looks at the extent to which your school supports pupils to gain knowledge regarding exercising and eating healthy

  • It is a key outcome in the Sunderland City Council, City Plan 2019 - 2030

  • It is a criterion in Together for Children's Sunderland Healthy Schools Award

  • It is linked to the Together for Children's Mental Health Charter Mark

  • It complements the work of the School Games Organisers (School Games Mark), Change 4 Life Sunderland (previously known a Lifestyles, Activity and Food programme (LAF)

It is FREE for schools to apply for the Great Active Sunderland School Charter and to make the process easier schools can now apply online. In addition to assist schools further a set of frequently asked questions have been produced along with example on line survey answers Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter 2020-21 - example survey answers.

In conclusion, the School Charter has quickly developed a proven track record to showcase a school's achievements regarding PE, sport and its role in the community. It is hoped that schools will participate in achieving the Charter and recognise how this programme can benefit schools and pupils.

Coronavirus update for schools

As we are all aware Coronavirus (COVID-19) has had a massive impact on the lives of everyone over these past few months and in view of this the decision has been made to operate the Charter in a shorter format.

Schools holding 2019 - 2020 Award

The completion of this shorter format will enable schools to maintain their current award into 2020 - 2021.

Schools new to the Charter

Schools new to the Charter will be able to gain an interim award in 2020 - 2021. This will then pave the way for the school to gain either a Bronze, Silver or Gold award in 2021 - 2022.

Yvonne Setchell, Events and Active Sunderland Delivery Officer will continue to actively embed 'The Great Active Sunderland Schools Charter' across the city's schools and build on the successes achieved so far.
