Convert a civil partnership into a marriage

Couples who registered their partnership in England or Wales are able to convert their civil partnership to a marriage.

This can be done in one of two ways:

Standard conversion - one stage

This is a simple administrative process where you will both attend an appointment at any register office in England or Wales to complete and sign a declaration about you and your civil partnership.

You will need to bring the following documentation to the appointment:

  • Evidence of your name and date of birth current passport or birth certificate (with any change of name documentation)
  • Evidence of your address recent council tax bill, utility bill or bank statement
  • An original civil partnership certificate

Your marriage will then be registered and you can purchase a marriage certificate

Conversion followed by a ceremony - two stages

You will need to attend an appointment at any register office in England or Wales to complete a declaration about you and your civil partnership.

Stage 1 - Administrative stage

You will need to bring the following documentation to the appointment:

  • Evidence of your name and date of birth current passport or birth certificate (with any change of name documentation)
  • Evidence of your address recent council tax bill, utility bill or bank statement
  • An original civil partnership certificate

 

Stage 2 - Ceremony and signing of the declaration

The signing of the declaration can take place on the same day or a later date (within 12 months of the declaration) at a venue of your choice. For example:

  • Register Office
  • Approved premise
  • Religious buildings that are registered for the marriage of same sex couples
  • Premises where a ceremony according to the Jewish faith or the Society of Friends is to immediately follow the signing of the declaration

After the ceremony, your marriage will be registered and a certificate can be issued. This can be posted to you or collected from the Register Office.
