Sunderland Crematorium is the only crematorium owned and operated by Sunderland City Council. Opened in 1951, the crematorium consists of a chapel which can accommodate 70 visitors seated with a further 70 people standing to the rear, visitor waiting room, Hall of Remembrance and Memorial Garden. The chapel has a sound system and loop induction system to assist those who are hard of hearing.
Parking bays are on the left of the driveway as you enter the grounds and also to the rear of the Crematorium. The grounds operate a one-way system with a rear exit gate entering into Bishopwearmouth Cemetery.
The Crematorium waiting room is comfortably furnished and has toilet facilities for able and less abled bodied visitors. In the case of highly attended funerals, the service will be transmitted onto the television monitor in the waiting room and also be broadcast outside to attendees who have gathered underneath the entrance canopy.
The Crematorium and the Hall of Remembrance is open Monday to Thursday from 9am until 5pm, and on Fridays from 9am until 4.30pm. The Hall of Remembrance is open on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 12pm until 3pm. The Garden of Remembrance is open at all times.
