Frequently Asked Questions

What is Digital Challenge?
The Challenge seeks to establish new methods of working with technology, targeting hard to reach groups and individuals who may be currently digitally excluded for any of a number of reasons. Sunderland will be required to disseminate to other local authorities and DCLG (Department for Communities and Local Government) all lessons learnt over the life of the programme, that is the purpose of the Challenge.

Lessons learnt from the programme will impact of future central government policy toward the use of technologies in the community.

What Digital Challenge is not
It is not a source of funding. The award which the city won last year against very stiff national opposition is to fund all the work needed to create the projects outlined in our original bid.

It is not a raft of new council mainstream services. The Digital Challenge Partnership targets hard to reach individuals, communities and can be used to enhance existing services were appropriate whether they be from a statutory body or voluntary sector group.

Who runs the Challenge?
Digital Challenge is managed by a programme board made up from Sunderland Partnership members and others. It is chaired by Canon Stephen Taylor (LSP Chair) and has support at all levels of government both local, regional and central.

Sunderland City Council is the responsible body accountable for standards, finance control project management etc.
