Sustainability in Sunderland

What is sustainability? Sustainability, or sustainable development, is about improving the quality of our lives now, in the four areas listed opposite, but without damaging the natural environment and destroying the resources that future generations depend on to have fulfilling and happy lives themselves. Sunderland is aiming to become the most liveable city in the UK, with a sustainable future that means it will stay that way. These pages summarise what Sunderland is doing to help achieve this goal. What's new... Many thanks to the 45 volunteers that helped at Beachwatch 2008 at Hendon Beach! A survey has indicated that the city-wide climate change campaign was a success! Sunderland has been awarded Fairtrade City status, jointly with the City of London (see press release) on 22 October 2007.
