Ever felt like adults don’t listen to young people?
Ever thought, “Why don’t the people who make
decisions about us ask us what we think”
Ever thought, “I wish I could find out
more about how money is spent”
Well if you have then the Sunderland Youth Parliament might
just be up your street, so read on to find out more.
The Youth Parliament is brand new to Sunderland and is
a chance for young people aged 11-18 to have their say.
It will be a structure for young people aged 11-18 to have their
say. It will be for young people to learn how different sections
of the council work, a chance for young people to set their
own work plans and an opportunity for council Departments to
consult you and ask you what you think.
Fancy that, a way for young people to be represented and a
chance to influence policy makers... and have social events!
Here are some questions we’ve been asked:-
How many young people will be on the parliament?
A. About 70, 40 from schools and 30 from youth
clubs/community groups.
Q How will to work?
A. Well, a group of young people organised a Youth
Convention which was in September, and what many of
the young people said was to have a parliament of 70
which meet every six or eight weeks, and there will be
a 'Cabinet' as well.
Q. What's the 'Cabinet'?
A. It will be a group of about 15 to 20 young people, elected
by other parliament members, who will be the engine of
the parliament. They will meet perhaps every two weeks,
and be much more active-give more time and energy.
Q. How will the people we represent contact us?
A. We are planning to have a web page and e-mailing, so
schools and youth clubs can contact the parliament with
issues they want looking at.
Q. What will we get out of it?
A. You will get free training, Certificates, transport costs,
social events, meet new people, have something a bit
different on your C.V. and the opportunity to have your
voice listened to.
Go on give it a go!!
