| Coping with a disaster or major incident If you have been affected by
disaster, whether directly or indirectly, you may be finding it
difficult to cope with things. Dealing with the after-effects and trying
to carry on with life may seem impossible and you may be looking for
external support. The following resources may be of interest to you:
Care Line is a pre-planned, coordinated system of
social and psychological support available for survivors, the bereaved,
their relatives and friends during and after a Major Incident. The service
has experienced trained
people who will provide sensitive support for people distressed as a
result of a major incident or state of emergency. The service operates on a short/medium term basis and makes arrangements for longer
term support if needed.
Sunderland Care Line is a team of volunteers from
all backgrounds who are trained to help people in the response to a
disaster, both immediately following the incident and also longer term.
They are contactable on 0191 510 3788. There are also Care Line teams
in the other Districts within Tyne and Wear.
The NHS has produced a
website which gives
guidance on coping with the stress and after effects of a major
incident. It provides information for those people affected by the
London Bombings on July 7th 2005. It also provides generic
advice.
Disaster
Action is an independent advocacy service set up by survivors and
those bereaved by major disasters. It is a charity and offers support to
those affected by disaster, and has produced a variety of leaflets and
publications.
