Coping with a disaster or major incident

If you have been affected by disaster, whether directly or indirectly, you may be finding it difficult to cope with things. Dealing with the after-effects and trying to carry on with life may seem impossible and you may be looking for external support. The following resources may be of interest to you:

Care Line is a pre-planned, coordinated system of social and psychological support available for survivors, the bereaved, their relatives and friends during and after a Major Incident.  The service has experienced trained people who will provide sensitive support for people distressed as a result of a major incident or state of emergency.  The service operates on a short/medium term basis and makes arrangements for longer term support if needed.

Sunderland Care Line is a team of volunteers from all backgrounds who are trained to help people in the response to a disaster, both immediately following the incident and also longer term.  They are contactable on 0191 510 3788.  There are also Care Line teams in the other Districts within Tyne and Wear.

The NHS has produced a external linkwebsite which gives guidance on coping with the stress and after effects of a major incident.  It provides information for those people affected by the London Bombings on July 7th 2005.  It also provides generic advice.

external linkDisaster Action is an independent advocacy service set up by survivors and those bereaved by major disasters. It is a charity and offers support to those affected by disaster, and has produced a variety of leaflets and publications.
