Supplementary Planning Documents / Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPDs / SPGs)

SPDs and SPGs are not statutory documents, but supplement Development Plan Documents (DPDs) by giving more detailed advice on how to comply with the policies contained within the relevant DPDs.

Central Area Urban Design Strategy

The Central Area Urban Design Strategy SPD ( pdf 5mb) establishes a clear vision for the type of place Sunderland wants to be, drawing together different development proposals and design guidance.

The SPD will form part of the Sunderland City Council Local Development Framework in due course and supplements policy B2A of Sunderland City Council's UDP Alteration No. 2 (Central Sunderland).

The document was adopted by the City Council on 25th July 2008 and as such will become a material consideration in the determination of all planning applications within the Central Area as defined in the SPD.

Sunniside Planning and Design Framework

The Sunniside Planning and Design Framework (SPDF) ( pdf 9mb) provides planning and design guidance for the future development of the Sunniside area. This SPD will form part of the Sunderland City Council Local Development Framework in due course and supplements policy SA55B.1 of Sunderland City Council's UDP Alteration No. 2 (Central Sunderland).

The SPDF incorporates the East Sunniside Masterplan that has been prepared to provide a comprehensive planning and design framework for the regeneration of the eastern part of Sunniside, including Tavistock. The Masterplan has been produced as part of a pro-active collaboration between Sunderland City Council, Sunniside Partnership and Sunderland arc, with close involvement and consultation with One North East, English Partnerships and other stakeholders.
