| We organize activities on Local Nature
Reserves Fulwell Quarry, Hylton Dene and Tunstall Hills in Sunderland, Barmston
Pond in Washington and Hetton Bogs in Hetton-le-Hole. Conservation
volunteers can take part in events (walks, crafts) and conservation
tasks (surveys, hedge coppicing). Training will be provided for each
task. The emphasis is on enjoyment, no one will be asked to work outside their capabilities. Tasks run between 10.30am and 4pm. Free transport is provided from the Civic Centre or volunteers can make their own way to the LNR. Please confirm by Thursday afternoon prior to the task your means of transport. Please wear walking or Wellington boots and bring warm and waterproof clothing. Volunteers must bring a packed lunch with them. Hot drinks will be provided. |

Volunteer work days have included wildflower surveys at Hetton Bogs, craft activities at Durham County Show, tree planting at Tunstall Hills and a Hedgelaying training course. Sunday 21st October: Tree Felling at Hylton Dene LNR Learn how to fell sycamore and white poplar at Hylton Dene. The area will be replanted later with native tree species. |

Barmston Pond Learn to prune a hedgerow and to undertake winter bird counting (WeBS). |

Saturday 8th December: 'LNR in Argentina' and Christmas Drink Our annual social meeting will be held indoor at Herrington Country Park with a talk on Local Nature Reserves in South America. |

Sunday 27th January: Tree Planting at Hylton Dene 10.30 start Join Maurice Bates for a native tree planting session. Winter fun guaranteed and a free tree to take home to help wildlife in your garden. |

Saturday 16th February: Winter Tree ID and Bird Boxes at
Herrington Country Park Always wanted to recognise winter trees? Join Ian Graham to find the clues hidden in winter buds and bark. Help the public make bird boxes.

Sunday 16th March: The Miller's Trail A join task with Sunderland Countryside Rangers to organise and lead a public guided walk around the Fulwell area. An event will be held to prepare for this task prior to the date. |
