Community Wildspace Project
To enhance Sunderland's wildlife and
habitats, an exciting new project started in the City of Sunderland
in 2003: the Community
Wildspace Project.
The aim of the Wildspace Project is to care for endangered
plants and animals (bee orchid, song thrush,. water vole) and
improve nationally rare habitats such as the Magnesian Limestone
grasslands.
To help protect this rich and varied landscape five Local Nature
Reserves (LNR's) have been declared as part of the Wildspace
Project: Barmston Pond, Fulwell Quarry, Hetton Bogs, Hylton Dene and
Tunstall Hills
The Project also encourages people to explore and
care for their Local Nature Reserves.
The Wildspace Officer has established Wildspace
Conservation Volunteers and supports friends of LNR's. The
volunteer group meet on the third weekend of every month to
undertake conservation tasks.
The Wildspace Officer carries out a range of
educational workshops. If your school or group would like to
discuss a project on LNR, please contact the Wildspace Volunteer
Co-ordinator.
