Deputy Leader of the Council

Councillor Florence Anderson

Councillor Florence Anderson was elected Deputy Leader of the Council in May 2008. She was previously Chair of the Regeneration and Community Review Committee and a former Cabinet Member.

Born in Shiney Row, she was educated in both Shiney Row and Newcastle before studying at Newbattle Abbey College in Scotland. She has worked as a Housing Officer in Houghton Le Spring as well as in the Civil Service, Boilermakers Union and for Age Concern.

Councillor Anderson has lived and worked in Hetton for over 30 years representing the Hetton Ward on Hetton Town Council, Tyne and Wear County Council and, since 1991, Sunderland City Council.

Councillor Florence Anderson

She is a widow with one daughter and has two grandsons. She is also secretary for Hetton Senior Citizen’s Forum and has a keen interest in animal welfare.

Duties

The Deputy Leader of the Council assists the Leader of the Council in carrying out his official duties and deputises for him in his absence. The Deputy is also the Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet and holds the portfolio for Community Safety and the City Centre.
