Payments

The vast majority of businesses pay their Business Rates for the year by ten monthly instalments from April to January. You will find these instalments shown on your bill.

There are a variety of methods of payment to the City of Sunderland available to Council Tax Payers and these are all handled by the Cashiers Service.

The most convenient method of payment is:

Direct Debit

This  has the following benefits to you:

  • you can choose the day in the month that suits you, non-direct debit payers must pay on the 5th of each month.
  • you don't have to remember to make a payment, write a cheque or visit the Council's Office - the payment will automatically be made for you;
  • you will be notified of the monthly instalment at least 14 days before the first payment is due;
  • you will receive a bill but this will be for information only;
  • apart from checking your bank statement you don't have anything else to do;
  • by becoming a Direct Debit payer you keep the cost of collection low and thus allow more of your money to be used to provides services.

If you want to pay by Direct Debit please phone 0191 553 1850 or 553 1890 and have your bank details handy.
