Getting Copies of Certificates
For Births, Deaths and Marriages that occurred in Sunderland you can obtain copies of certificates by either:
  • If the certificate required is from a recently registered event please telephone the Register Office for advice on fees on (0191) 520 5509
  • Printing out and completing the Certificate Application Form (pdf document pdf 17kb) and sending it by post with a cheque or postal order for the appropriate fee (see below) and a stamped self-addressed envelope
  • Writing to the Register Office with as much detail as possible about the names and the event that will allow us to identify the register entry.  Please enclose the appropriate fee (see below) and a stamped self-addressed envelope.
  • For copy marriage certificates, you can now search our website. Once you have found the entry you need, please follow the instructions to send us your request and the appropriate fee.
  • Attending the Register Office and completing an application form.

Cheques or Postal Orders should be made payable to 

'Superintendent Registrar'.

Full Birth Certificate £7.00
Short Birth Certificate £5.50
Marriage Certificate £7.00
Death Certificate £7.00

The short birth certificate does not include details of the parents and may not be accepted by passport offices or other organisations.
