Your Schools Library Service can provide the following services to help you deliver the National Curriculum at all Key Stages:

Literacy Hour Resources Large collection of fiction and non-fiction titles for shared and guided reading. Big Books also available some with their smaller format counterparts.

Project boxes A termly loan of 15-20 boxes on a particular topic delivered and collected from your school.

IT Facilities Word processing facilities, access to the Internet, up to date information about children's websites.

Stock loans 150 fiction books for primary schools and 200 books for secondary schools  tailored to your particular requirements. Nursery schools can borrow 75 books. 

Teachers Resources A comprehensive range of items to assist with classroom activities and professional development

Artefact Boxes Items linked to the main historical periods e.g. Ancient Egyptians,  the major religions e.g. Buddhism, and Science and Geography topics delivered and collected from your school.

Storybags The bags contains games, toys and books linked to particular stories or topics e.g. Cinderella, Transport.

Audio Visual Materials Educational and story videos and talking books

Author Visits Advice about arranging visits by authors to schools and access to authors through the Northern Children's Book Festival.

All staff employed at a school can be individual members of the service and can borrow 12 items at any one time from our base at the Sandhill Centre.

Access to the full range of resources in the City's libraries

Pupil Librarians in secondary schools can now take part in a scheme run by the Schools Library Service to ensure they have the skills to help their school librarian.  A similar course will be tried out for primary pupil librarians in 2006/7

Pre-and Post-OFSTED advice concerning your school library
Professional and experienced staff to:
Help with selecting books and other resources for the school library
Advice about library layout and organisation
Talks to children about looking after books, information skills and reading
Courses and meetings for staff, governors and parents about libraries and children's books. These can be held at the Sandhill Centre or in your school
