Copt Hill lies to the east of the town of Houghton-le-Spring, within the city of
Sunderland.
It is identified by the Seven Sisters
Barrow, a round barrow circled by a
ring of six mature but wind blown Beech trees.
In 2000 the site was purchased from a local farmer by the Great North Forest
with the aid of a grant of the Heritage lottery fund. A condition of the
grant was the geophysical survey of the site which resulted in some remarkable
evidence suggesting extensive archaeological remains over a large area of the
site.
The natural heritage and historical heritage of the site and the value to the
community as an area of public open space has resulted in the formation of a
local interest group, Friends of Copt
Hill.( pdf 92kb)
