The Council takes concerns raised over traffic speed very seriously. Where a concern is raised over the speed of traffic in a specific area, the Traffic, Parking and Road Safety Section of the Development and Regeneration Directorate will carry out an assessment of speeds driven on the road \ roads in question. The data will be considered, and the Council will decide on an appropriate course of action and will subsequently inform the body that raised the concern of the intended course of action.

The most common forms of action that the Council are likely to take are listed below:

  • The police will be informed where the speed of traffic is substantially above the prevailing speed limit

  • The Council will consider implementing physical measures that would bring about a reduction in the speed of traffic.

  • No further action will be taken as the speeds are similar or lower than on other similar roads elsewhere in the City.

If you would like to raise your concerns over the speed of traffic in your area then you can do this by contacting the Traffic, Parking and Road Safety Section of the Development and Regeneration Directorate via the telephone on 0191 5531520 or by emailing the section at traffic@sunderland.gov.uk
