Local History Groups which meet in Sunderland Public Libraries

Sunderland Heritage & Local History  Forum
The Forum was established in 1977 in order to pursue objectives which were of common value and interest to all of the heritage and history groups of the City and their members.  It includes representatives of all of the groups , the University of Sunderland and the City Council.  Since 1977 the Forum has run a number of conferences, organised programmes of events and activities put on by the members' groups and has co-ordinated programmes of Open Days.  

Monkwearmouth Local History Group
Meetings are held at Monkwearmouth Library  on the first and third Monday of the month at 2.00pm.   Each month there is an arranged activity - either a specially invited speaker, local discussion group meeting or research. Non members are welcome on payment of small fee.

Houghton & District  Local History Group
Meetings are  held at Houghton Library at 6.30pm on the following dates:  

  • January 26 - John Davison - Durham Soldiers of the Great War

  • February 23 - Stuart Miller - A Tale of Dragons

  • March 23 - Norman Kelly - Grocers - The Saints & The Sinners

  • April 27 - Tony McGough - The History of the Houghton Mines Rescue Station

  • May 25 - John Stephenson - Working Class Nostalgia

  • July 27 - George Nairn  - North East Postcard Photographers and a Trip up the Northumberland Coast

  • September 28  - Keith Hamilton - Herrington Country Park  - Past, Present and Future

  • October 26 - Doug Smith - Press Gangs

  • November 23 - Colin Mountford - A History of the Lambton Engine Works from 1835

Last minute changes may occur, therefore to avoid disappointment on a particular talk telephone the library on 0191 - 553 6475 prior to the event.  No membership necessary, however £1.00 per person per meeting which includes tea/coffee served on arrival.
