News and Events.

Black History Month - Black History Month has been celebrated around the UK for the past 30
years. This is a time to highlight and celebrate the achievements of the black community and uncover hidden history about our communities.  For more information please download the leaflet  (PDF Icon pdf 291kb)

Houghton Feast - There's something for everyone at this years Houghton Feast with a host of exciting activities and events taking place. The traditional 10-day festival provides a unique mix of community, voluntary and professionally staged events that will ensure a diverse and enjoyable programme. (PDF Icon pdf 651kb)

National Year of Reading - 2008 is the National Year of Reading which is a national campaign to help build a greater love of reading, highlighting the benefits that reading for pleasure and purpose can bring to people of all ages. In the coming months all libraries in Sunderland will be holding a full programme of events to help people discover the joy of books and reading.  This months theme is Word of Mouth’, celebrating storytelling, reading out loud, reading together and live literature.

Adult Learning Courses - A wide variety of courses will begin in libraries during September. Courses such as painting, scrapbooking, jewellery making, flower arranging and card craft will take place together with history, family history and DIY. Complimenting these will be ICT courses including word processing, email and internet. New to the programme this year will be 30 week accredited courses offered by Sunderland Women's Centre and supported by City of Sunderland College which will enhance the accredited courses already offered at Washington Millennium Centre and Hetton Library. Silksworth Library is currently temporarily relocated at Silksworth Community Centre.
