Recycling projects and campaigns
Recycling paid off for one Houghton mum after she scooped £260 worth of prizes.
Helen Hoban won the prizes for recycling aerosols, food and drink cartons and glass jars after signing up for the North East Recycling Rewards competition.
Helen said: "I regularly recycle everything that I possibly can, so decided to register for the recycling rewards and recognition competition. Although I didn't expect to win I was delighted to be given a choice of prizes. Since the children help to recycle, there is something special for them too."
Jennie Armstrong from Washington was another winner. Jennie said: "I found out about the competition at work. I already recycle quite a lot anyway but I didn't know about the new things you can recycle like drinks cartons and aerosols so this has encouraged me to recycle even more."
Councillor James Blackburn, Sunderland City Council's Portfolio Holder for City Services said: "This is a great opportunity to do something for the environment at the same time as being in with the chance of winning a prize."
The scheme, managed by Waste Aware North East and Valpak Limited and supported by Sunderland City Council, aims to reward environmentally conscious residents and raise awareness of the opportunity to recycle glass jars, food and drink cartons and aerosols.
How to enter the monthly prize draw
To enter the monthly prize draw, which runs until the end of September 2013, all you need to do is apply for a unique sticker pack from North East Recycling Rewards or by calling 0844 844 4546.
Then, apply the personalised stickers to empty glass jars, food and drink cartons or aerosols before placing in your blue recycling bin as usual.
If you win, you'll be offered a choice of prizes up to the value of £250.
Alternatively, you can choose to donate your prize to a local community group of your choice, or use the money available to contribute toward something of that group's choice, such as a day out.
Sunderland City Council has recently expanded the range of things you can recycle in your blue bins to include food and drink cartons, plastic food packaging and clean foil.
