Next steps for New Wear Crossing
Sunderland City Council's Cabinet has concluded that the landmark New Wear Crossing design is unaffordable in its current form.
As a result the recent procurement process to appoint a contractor to deliver the landmark bridge scheme will be brought to a close.
The council is now in discussion with the Department for Transport regarding its new proposals for a simplified cable-stayed design, procurement and construction process, and is providing them with all they need to continue their funding support.
The Department for Transport offered £82.563m conditional funding for the New Wear Crossing (SSTC) project in December 2011, following its evaluation of the 'Best and Final Bid', which set out the strategic objectives of the New Wear Crossing. These included the scheme's capacity to improve connectivity and unlock unused land; in turn attracting investment, creating growth and jobs.
A simplified bridge will deliver these same benefits to Sunderland and the wider North East region.
