Despite its urban character, Sunderland is home to a complex mosaic of habitats including woodlands, meadows and wetlands all of which support a range of species such as water vole, badger, brown hare and great crested newt.

Countryside - volunteers
An exciting project in Sunderland where individuals can go out into the countryside and perform practical tasks, such as repairs to fences, lay paths etc, is the Sunderland Countryside Rangers (SVCR).The rangers work throughout the region, some expenses are paid and training is given.

Parks and open spaces - maintenance
We are responsible for the maintenance and management of parks, open spaces and sports pitches. There are many different ways in which we maintain parks and open spaces including grass cutting, tree management, sports pitch line marking, planting up flower beds and much more.

We provide a well respected outdoor activity centre at Derwent Hill in the Lake District.
Seafront Regeneration Project
The fabulous coastline and golden beaches at Roker and Seaburn are among the city's best features. A city-wide public consultation on its regeneration was undertaken in 2009.
