If you have a child who is due to start a primary, infant or junior school in Reception or Year 3 in September 2017 or a secondary school in Year 7 in September 2017 you can apply for that place from these web pages.

Schools in Sunderland

Details of all schools, including Special Schools, are in the Schools Directory (on our Schools in Sunderland page).

You can find information on how they are performing on the Government's School performance tables website.

If you live outside Sunderland, you must apply to your home authority. This is normally the council that collects your council tax.

Applying online is the simplest option

School places are not allocated on a first come, first served basis. You can apply any time in the preference period. Please make sure all details are correct before submitting your form.

When you apply online you will receive an email confirmation once your application has been received.

You will also receive an email notification about your child's school place sooner than if you had applied by post.

Secondary school applications

For secondary applications your child's date of birth should be between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006.

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan or a Statement of Special Educational Needs, you should by now have had a review of your child's needs and been provided with an amended plan or statement. You can still apply for a place for your child using the online system. If you require more advice and guidance please contact the Special Educational Needs and Accessibility Team.

The preference period for secondary applications runs from 12 September to 6 November 2016.

Your application must be submitted by the end of this preference period in order for you to have the best chance of obtaining the school of your choice.

Please note the following amendment in the Admission to Secondary School Booklet. The Published Admission Number (PAN) for St Aidan's Catholic Academy for September 2017 is 180 and not 210. This relates to pages 11 & 48 in the booklet.

Primary, infant or junior school applications

You can apply for a primary or infant school place in reception or a junior school place in year three at the start of the normal school year, provided that your child was born between the following dates:

  • For infant and primary reception applications - between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013
  • For junior year 3 applications - between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010

The preference period for primary, infant and junior applications runs from 26 September 2016 to 15 January 2017.

Your application must be submitted by the end of this preference period in order for you to have the best chance of obtaining the school of your choice.

Apply for a school place online

During the preference period, you can apply online.

The more information you have about the schools you are considering, the better. The 'Related links' section of this page provides further useful information about our schools and the 'External links' section provides links to some useful websites.

Information packs will be sent out to community nurseries, private nurseries, infant schools and primary schools in September and you should receive a letter explaining what to do.

However, if you would like a copy of our guidance booklets, you can select them from the 'Related downloads' section on this page.

You may wish to read our School admissions - glossary of terms page if there are any phrases you are unsure of or do not understand.

If you cannot access a computer or cannot use your mobile device to complete the online form, you can get online at any of our Customer Service Centres.

On 1 March 2017 for secondary schools and 18 April 2017 for primary schools, you will be able to log back into your online account to check whether your child has been offered a school place. Simply log in and click on your child's name.
