Supporting People

The Supporting People programme helps a wide range of people to live independently in the community by providing a range of support and assistance. The programme aims to provide a high quality of support that meets individual needs on both a long and a short term basis.

The Supporting People programme was launched in April 2003 by central government. It brought together a number of funding streams to finance the provision of housing related support for vulnerable people and to monitor the quality of the services provided.

Groups of vulnerable people include:

  • Young people at risk
  • Teenage parents

  • People with a learning difficulty
  • Homeless people and those at risk of homelessness
  • People at risk of domestic violence
  • People who misuse drugs and/or alcohol
  • Ex-offenders and people at risk of offending
  • Travellers
