A collection of photographs and prints is kept in the Local Studies Centre

Some of the illustrations can be copied, although the library does not hold the copyright for much of the collection.

One example shown here is the Town Hall, Fawcett St., built in 1891 and demolished in 1971.  Just behind the Town Hall the South End of the old Central Station can be seen.

Further photographs and slides can be viewed by visiting Sunderland Then and Now.  This has been made possible by digitising photographs, slides and posters from the collection that represent the colourful history of the local area.  Also available are recent digital photographs that allow comparisons to be made between how Sunderland used to look and how it looks today.
