Licence - private hire drivers
This section sets out the requirements to obtain a Private Hire Driver's Licence.
To acquire a license to drive hackney carriages or private hire vehicles you must be over the age of 21 and you must have held a full driving license for one year. Applications are available from Environmental Health at the Civic Centre, Sunderland.
When applying for your first license the following procedure applies:
- The first stage is to sit a Knowledge / Locality Test This test consists of questions on the Highway Code, Licensing Law, Locations and Routes throughout the city.
- The next stage involves the completion of the application form. Contained are sections to be completed by the applicant, a registered Medical Practitioner and a Solicitor or Commissioner for Oaths.
- When this form is completed and returned to the Licensing Section with the relevant documentation, the applicant is required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check.
- When the check is returned and if all documentation is in order then a license is issued to the applicant. The license can be issued for either one or three years.
