Road safety
The reduction of injuries that occur to people through their involvement in road traffic crashes is an important priority for Sunderland City Council.
Sunderland City Council will continue to promote measures that will lead to reductions in the number of injury crashes and will seek to derive "Best Value", particularly in respect of the resources involved, giving particular priority to measures that will improve the safety of children on our roads, footpaths and cycleways.
Every road user also has an important part to play in improving road safety for themselves and for other road users.
There is no doubt that inappropriate and excessive speed leads to crashes. Driving too fast, particularly in the urbanized parts of our city, is a social evil which must be thought of in the same way that most people now think of drink-driving. This may require a sustained programme of measures and the co-operation of all agencies with an interest in road safety.
Sunderland City Council is seeking to develop its road safety strategy in partnership with the people of Sunderland. This process will involve the development of draft policies and consultation with interested parties. The Council's road safety programmes will broadly follow the Government's new road safety strategy "Tomorrows Roads: Safer for Everyone."
