European Parliamentary Election
Thursday, 4th June 2009

European Parliamentary elections take place every five years. Elections are held in all 27 member states between 4–7 June 2009. Voting in the UK will take place on Thursday 4 June 2009, and the result of the election will be announced after 9pm on Sunday 7 June 2009.

Elections to the European Parliament are run on a regional basis, and for this the UK is divided into 12 regions. Each region elects a number of Members to the European Parliament (MEPs), the number of MEPs allocated to a region is dependent on the number of voters in the region. The North East Region will be electing 3 MEP’s in June.

Dave Smith, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council is the Regional Returning Officer for the North East region, and is responsible for the overall management of the election across the region. The Local Returning Officer for each local authority is responsible for the day to day running of the election in their own area.
