Community Development Plan

Background to the Community Development Plan

The Sunderland Partnership, a partnership of public, private and voluntary and community sector groups operating in the City, is currently putting a Community Development Plan (“the Plan”) in place to assist in carrying forward its strategy for the City (the Sunderland Strategy).

The aim of the Plan is the development of a process of working collectively to bring about social change and justice for communities in Sunderland, taking into account

  • The geography of need and closing the inequalities gap;
  • Promoting active citizenship – to facilitate and support increased involvement by local people in decision making and involvement in their neighbourhoods; and
  • Supporting communities in identifying and meeting their needs, opportunities, rights and responsibilities.

Work on developing the Plan has been taking place since November 2006. This has involved an extensive set of Partner and community consultations across the City that has led to the production of the suite of draft documents, which were agreed by the Sunderland Partnership Board in April 2008:

Agreeing the draft of the Plan is only the beginning of the process. We hope that as the Plan moves forward to implementation later in the year you will be able to continue to play a part in involving all of the communities in the City in taking the Sunderland Strategy forward in partnership.
