This is my second term as St Chad’s Councillor, previously elected 2003 until 2007.  I was born in West Herrington and have lived in Middle Herrington for the last 23 years.  I retired (sacked) from the British Coal Corporation as Chief Mechanical Engineer when the previous Tory Government closed all the deep mines in the North East putting thousands out of work.  I am closely involved in the local community as a School Governor at Farringdon Primary School which has changed from Ofsted “Notice to Improve” to “Good with outstanding features”.  I chair the Sunderland South Forum, a registered charity which “Works with the Community for the Community”.  I am also a Director on the Management Committee of the Jubilee Centre. My other interests outside politics include the ‘North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers’ (The Mining Institute) as a Trustee.  The Mining Institute is a registered Charity incorporated by Royal Charter from Queen Victoria 1876 and a supplemental charter from Queen Elizabeth II 2005. The Mining Institute houses the Nicholas Wood Memorial Library, an archival library considered to be of National and International importance.  I am a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Mining Institute of which I had the honour to be President 2006-07.  I also served as Hon Secretary and Hon Treasurer for several years.  My other interests include playing golf at Wearside Golf Club where I was Seniors Captain for 2008 and 2009.
