Census 2001 - City of Sunderland Statistics

The 2001 Census took place on Sunday 29th April 2001.  Data about Sunderland and about Tyne and Wear more generally is now available.  This can be obtained either by visiting the ONS's own website, or via a range of fact cards which have been produced for the five Tyne and Wear councils by Tyne and Wear Research & Information (TWRI).   Use the links below to select the type of information you want:

Office for National Statistics website:

Population of Sunderland - Sunderland's population as at May 2001 was recorded as 280,807 persons (including students living at term time address).  Use this link to access a breakdown of this figure by age and sex.

Profile of Sunderland - Provides a range of information at city level (i.e. figures relating to the whole City area covering Sunderland, Washington, Houghton and Hetton).  

Statistics by Ward - Provides a range of 2001 Census data at ward level.  From the link page, choose 'find detailed statistics by area name', then use the drop-down list to select a region (e.g. North East), followed by a county (e.g. Tyne and Wear), a local authority area (e.g. Sunderland), then the ward required.
