In 1995 a series of six Area Regeneration Frameworks (ARFs) were created
within Sunderland, each looking at a particular part of the city -
Sunderland North, South, East, West, Washington and the Coalfield.
The aim of each Framework is to provide a clear and comprehensive summary
of regeneration policies and activities for that area. The exact
boundaries of these areas were revised in summer 2004 and Census data for
the revised areas is now available.
Frameworks provide an important means of co-ordinating resources and
directing them to areas of greatest need and opportunity. They guide
the allocation of Strategic Initiatives Budget (SIB) funding and also help
attract external funding. They are an integral part of planning and
policy setting within the City, and will contribute towards fulfilling the
aims of the City's Community Strategy. Each Framework area is
made up of several adjoining electoral wards, and so represents a fairly
large sector of the City.
Data from the 2001 Census has been compiled to give a picture of the
communities living in each of the Framework areas which can help to identify needs and
inform policy-making. You can use the links below to view fact cards giving census data about each of the six
areas. We hope to also make a map of
the Framework boundaries available here shortly. Information about smaller, more specific areas of the City
can be found on our Sunderland
Ward Fact Cards page.
