Welcome to Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools logo
The Healthy Schools Programme is a national initiative to help ensure that our children and young people can perform to the best of their ability.

The programme takes a whole school approach to improving children's health and wellbeing by recognising that the whole school day is important and that the whole school community plays a part in improving the health and wellbeing of pupils.

Black eyed peas
The programme is not just about physical health, it covers emotional health as well to help ensure that our children are happy as well as healthy.

How does it work?
The programme is designed around four core themes:
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity
  • Personal, Social and Health Education
  • Emotional Health and Wellbeing

Each theme is designed to run along side the other themes so that every aspect of the school day is included and positive messages are reinforced in many different contexts.

What are the benefits?
The Healthy Schools programme has been having a very positive effect on schools who have achieved status. Children feel healthier, happier and safer. Parents are more involved in their child’s health and learning and often feel better themselves. Schools have found that behaviour has improved along with the standards of work. It is clear that having a healthy school can do wonders for the whole school community.

Design a logo competition
Design a logo winner Congratulations to Rebekah Briggs, aged 9 from Bishop Harland Primary School for winning the 'design a logo' competition which was held in July 2008. There was a great response to the competition which was open to all schools across the city.

Rebekah won a day with Tony Jefferies, Olympic Bronze Medal Boxer, for her whole school on the last day of term.

All schools that have achieved Healthy Schools status will receive a banner with Rebekah's Healthy Lives logo in October to put on the school gates to promote their Healthy Schools status.
