Easington Lane Access Point - Community Growing Garden
Launch event at ELCAP

The Food in Schools Team are helping to turn the waste land at Easington Lane Community Centre into a community growing garden after successfully securing a £10,000 grant from 'Awards for All'.

Work is underway to improve the site. A garden consultant has designed the new layout and volunteers from the local community are helping to transform the site.

Once complete the garden will be available for use by the whole community, including the local primary school. Training will given to volunteers in basic gardening skills and accredited Level 2 Award in Nutrition.

Lets Make Lunchtime Fun
Primary boys eating lunch

The Food in Schools team secured a 10k innovation grant from the School Food Trust to develop a pack of activities for primary school children to do during lunchtime.

Many children find lunchtimes intimidating or have nothing to do. The 'Lets Make Lunchtime Fun' programme provides training for lunchtime supervisors in various skills, including nutrition, healthy eating, faddy eating, behaviour management and anti-bullying.

It also provides extra resources for children including food bingo, card games and sports equipment, to help them enjoy the whole lunchtime experience.

Pilots have taken place at Farringdon Primary School and New Penshaw Primary School and were very successful. Staff have reported that children enjoyed the activities and that behaviour improved. In addition staff noticed that children were calmer in the afternoons which meant that their school work improved.

The scheme is now being rolling out across the city so that all schools can benefit from this exciting new initiative.

Growing Clubs

Children in growing garden The Food in Schools Team have prepared a new resource to help schools across the city develop their own growing garden.

The pack comes in three parts and includes:

  • An introduction to growing clubs, the benefits of having a garden and how to get your club up and running.
  • Information on what to grow and how to grow it.
  • Recipes and activity ideas to make use of the produce.

Why not try these activities to get you started.
