Voluntary organisations
Bridge Project The Bridge Project was set up in 1985 to provide education and training for local women, which incorporated quality childcare to enable them to gain qualifications. Bridge aims to increase women’s self esteem, confidence and support their personal development to enable them to be independent and have control over their own lives and learning activities. A range of courses and activities are on offer including English and maths, confidence building, deaf awareness, introductory courses, arts and crafts, alternative therapies, childcare courses, computers, and lots more. Child Line Helps children with any problems they may be experiencing. Community Addiction Team Works with people experiencing problems with drugs and alcohol abuse. This service also works with the Carers' Centre to support carers of someone who uses alcohol/drugs, providing information and advice. Counselling for Life Ltd is a service for children and teenagers with difficult to treat medical conditions (as well as their brothers, sisters and other people who care for them). To provide a therapeutic service to children, young people, their parents and carers who have experienced sexual abuse. Services available include individual therapy, play and art therapy, group work for adolescents and mothers group. Life Pregnancy Care Centre Provide free pregnancy testing, confidential, impartial advice and pregnancy/abortion counselling and counselling after
abortion. Also provides help with baby clothes and equipment. Offers one-to-one support for anyone affected by drug, alcohol or gambling problems. NECA also offers support to
families, friends, carers and colleagues affected by someone else's substance use. Pennywell Neighbourhood Centre Provide a broad range of health and family support services for children and their families. Services include full day and wrap around childcare, out of school schemes, children's activity sessions, parenting groups, further education, teenage sexual health clinic, healthy living initiatives, playgroups, parent and toddler groups, outside playground and baby clinic and fitness sessions. Single Parent Action Network (SPAN UK) SPAN helps to find support for single parents on any issues concerning their family. The help available includes
childcare, health, benefits, advice, housing, legal, training, concerns about children, activities, meeting other single
parents and someone to talk to. Provide training in a range of vocational areas, volunteering opportunities and personal development. Provide a diversity of work with young people aged 8 to 25 including group work, education, employment, courses, general youth work and junior age sessions, outreach drug and alcohol. (From 10 am to 9 pm most weekdays.) Sunderland Carers' Centre Sunderland Carers' Centre provides confidential information, advice and support service to people looking after ill, disabled or frail family members or friends. The Centre also offers carers support groups, support at meetings with social workers, psychiatrists, consultants etc, courses, social activities and a free newsletter every two months. Sunderland Counselling Service Counselling support for young people who have suffered a loss through bereavement, parents' divorce/separation or have been bullied or other issues. Sunderland and South Tyneside Family Mediation Service To mediate between separating couples, to enable them to make agreements regarding the future for their children.
They also consult with children in appropriate cases. Provide support and information relevant to the needs of young Asian people. Also work in association with other organisations and local people in a common effort to advance education, health, welfare, training, leisure and employment opportunities with the purpose of improving the social and economic choices of young people in Sunderland. YMCA Herrington Burn Provide a wide range of activities for young people including Youth and Community Learning This service supports a rich variety of Voluntary Sector Youth Provision. Local voluntary sector youth workers provide positive and creative educational opportunities and activities for young people throughout the City. Youth Area Workers provide a network of advice, support and challenging activities in partnership with a host of other agencies, volunteers and young people.
